Chopsticks and pride
I installed the Amazon Unbox player on my Windows XP virtual machine that I installed on my mac mini. (see Kim's Notes to the World ) As a test I downloaded Culinary China Episode 1 This is a show I had never seen before, but I am interested in China, its food and culture . The show is about different parts of Chinese food culture from chop sticks, noodles and vinegars. The part of the show that made me smile and think was the section about chopsticks. It was about Mr. Lung Chen (unsure of spelling), who is a self made expert and collector of chopsticks. He goes around China and talks to people about chopsticks and there importance in Chinese history and culture. He also collects chopsticks and has his own museum. Lets face it chopsticks are basically two sticks, their form and function has not changed in thousands of years. This was a story of a man who was very proud of his cultural and especially chopsticks. The people who he talked to also seemed genially interested in what he had to say. I started thinking about what we would have thought about Mr. Chen, unfortunately I suspect at first we would make fun of him at first, and then overtime we might have come to admire his tenacity and his enthusiasm.
